"Cry for Yous", also known every bit "Cry for Yous (Yous'll Never Encounter Me Again)" on Hard2Beat,[1] is a vocal by Swedish vocalist Petra Marklund, performing every bit September. The dance-pop runway spent three weeks at the top spot of Billboard's Hot Dance Airplay Nautical chart in May 2007.[2] In the United States, information technology is the second single from September'southward album September, succeeding "Satellites" (a number 8 hitting on the Dance Airplay chart), while overseas it is her fifth unmarried release from her second studio album In Orbit, following "It Doesn't Thing". It is too a single from diverse compilation albums released in Europe.

The single was a huge success in Sweden every bit well as the rest of Europe, and can be considered her biggest striking yet, together with "Satellites". In her homeland of Sweden, "Weep for You" peaked at the number 6 position on the Swedish Top 60 Singles Chart for two weeks in a row. It remained on the singles chart in Sweden for 17 non-consecutive weeks.

Equally of Nov 2010, "Cry for You lot" has been certified Gold in the Us for sales of over 500,000 copies, making September the starting time Swedish vocalizer to receive a Gold certification in the United States since Ace of Base'southward 1998 hit "Barbarous Summer".

In late 2018, near 12 years afterwards its release, the song was turned into a meme on Twitter, thanks to its "you'll never see me again" lyrics.[3]

Composition and release [edit]

Before the worldwide release in 2007, September had originally recorded the vocal for her studio anthology In Orbit (2005). However, in many compilations September has released, the vocal has appeared on her compilations including September, Dancing in Orbit, Golden and Cry for You - The Anthology. According to September, she explained the reason why she wanted to release it worldwide, past saying "The song was and so strong by itself. And I've been there and it feels like the fans are starved of dance music. Simply now trip the light fantastic music is coming dorsum again, and the world is getting smaller and smaller because of the cyberspace – that now sometimes you don't even have to do much promotion, although plain it is yet very important. Merely I recall that a hit song will e'er find a style."[4]

In an interview with Digital Spy, they asked most the background of the vocal, when she replied:[iv]

"Information technology's about when you're done with relationship. A lot of people write to me and say 'It'due south really emotional and I feel so much for the song considering my beau la la la', which is really overnice for me, fifty-fifty though I didn't write the lyrics. I've had a lot of experiences like that so that'southward what gives me the nerve to sing it."

The song features a dance-pop,[five] Europop[6] [7] and house[8] sound and has been compared to Bronski Crush's "Smalltown Boy" and its sampled analogue, "Tell Me Why" by Supermode, although possible similarities have been declared unintended.[9]

Critical reception [edit]

"Cry for You" received positive reviews from music critics. Nick Levine from Digital Spy awarded the song with four stars out of 5, giving it a positive review. He stated "[...] it's a surprisingly affecting Eurodance number, a record that'south both relentlessly danceable and desperately sad" and said its "actually a pretty decent record."[10] However, he felt the vocal was not "original" enough to outbet releases by fellow Swedish singer Robyn. Popjustice said the song is a "massive balls-out club anthem and we call up it works rather well."[xi] Ben Norman from About.com called the song the "All-time Dance Crossover Track", while maxim "Robbins [Entertainment] has since made peace with me by bankroll and promoting Swedish singer September and this Europop confection. Expert job guys!."[12]

AllMusic had rated the song three-and-a-half-stars out of 5 stars.[thirteen] Grand. Ross Hoffman, likewise from AllMusic, had highlighted the song as an album standout, and said "'Cry [for You]' is the obvious standout, managing to conjure both composure and a surprising degree of emotion from its adequately pedestrian frothy electro-popular arrangement and polished simply powerful vocal turn."[14] Even so, he also added "'Weep for You' is a strong enough track (though fairly faceless too, in its way) [...]." PopBytes.com gave it a positive review, saying information technology's "full pop dance fluff only highly enjoyable."[15]

Music video [edit]

Ii music videos were released for the single. The international version is set at the edge of a futuristic city inside a big lone building which could be a prison, barracks or manufacturing plant. Inside are hundreds of clones dressed in blackness latex catsuits who are marching in unison, watched over past women wearing white. They at starting time appear to be marching towards a screen which shows September singing and dancing while wearing a strapless dress. The video intercuts between September and 1 of the clones singing the vocal, while another clone dances atop a podium. On the bridge, one of the clones breaks ranks. Every bit she runs away, she takes off her black sunglasses and hood of her catsuit to reveal she is September. She is pursued by the women guards dressed in white who fire their light amplification by stimulated emission of radiation guns, but September reaches a door and escapes exterior.[17]

The original video was a promotional video featuring September in a photoshoot, every bit it features on several covers of the singles CD cover formats. This version uses the original radio edit, while the UK video uses the U.k. mix of the song.[eighteen]

Cyberspace meme [edit]

Beginning in late 2018, "Cry for You" received renewed interest when it appeared in a pop meme format on Twitter. The meme juxtaposes a portion of the song's chorus, in which Marklund sings "you'll never come across me again", with captions that ascribe the statement to entities such every bit socks that go missing after doing laundry, "Tumblr users later December 17th" (in reference to the site's ban on pornography), or "Lady Gaga to pop music after the gays [let] ArtPop flop".[3]
